Small Business Accountants need to care about your business

I started my own company around 10 years ago and 5 years later it’s still running today. So when it comes to small businesses, I have had my fair share of experiences. If I were to recount the number of hurdles and challenges I had to overcome, I could probably turn this piece into a novel and dedicate a chapter to each day in the first year of my business.

A decade ago, I found a way to make organic soaps and lotions in my kitchen for insanely low prices and began to hand them out to my friends as gifts. I made sure to keep the soaps sensitive on the skin but to still have a sweet, non artificial aroma. My friends loved them. They convinced me to start selling at the Sunday markets, where they turned out to be a huge hit. Soon enough, I had cultivated a huge following at these markets as people began to talk. I had had customers who’d come specially to get my soaps and I couldn’t be prouder. Soon the demand was getting hectic and my supplies were consistently short by the end of each market. So I thought, why not turn this into a business?

I began looking online to figure out what it was that I needed to do first. I knew that I didn’t want to spend all day in a shop because at the time, my kids were still little and their father was working full time. I needed to be able to work from home so I knew I needed to start an online shop. The problem was, how could I do that? I wasn’t a millennial, I had no clue on how these things worked. I found someone that I knew could help me.

I consulted a small business accountant about my new business venture. It was comforting to know that there was someone who could help me. My friends and husband were just as clueless as me when it came to this. They advised me on my finances and how much to invest into my business. They also knew who to contact about website designing and advertising.

I was so lucky to have an accountant who cared about me and what I was doing. It’s so important that the people who help you care about what actually happens to your business which you clearly invest so much energy and time in. Without the people at the start who helped me, I know I wouldn’t have been as successful as I am now.
